Thank You!

I wanted to give a quick thank-you to my supporters and followers. In a tough day for minor parties and independents across Maryland, my own campaign did well. I’ve been honored to receive your support. I’ve striven in all that I’ve done in the campaign to make you, my supporters, proud by remaining true to my principles and civil in my demeanor.

Make a Difference: My Campaign & My Endorsements!

We’re down to the final weekend before election day. If you’re supporting my campaign and me, I’d ask that you also let your friends and family know about my campaign, so that they might consider adding their support… their votes!… to yours. For which, this flyer summarizes my message and provides an organized set of links to my videos and my statements on the issues.

Please share and use the flyer as you see fit!

But besides promoting my own campaign, I wanted to share that for the first time in my life, consistent with my constant encouragement for EVERYONE to think and vote different so that we can escape the appalling polarization of modern two-party politics, I myself will be voting for a mix of Libertarians, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents on Tuesday. From which mix, I want to give a few endorsements.

Endorsement from Gov. Bill Weld

I’m honored to announce my endorsement by Bill Weld, who is the former governor of Massachusetts; was the 2016 VP candidate for the Libertarian Party (LP); and is a leading candidate for the 2020 presidential nomination for the LP.

In his endorsement, Gov. Weld said, “Maryland deserves a voice in Congress who will stand for sustainable health care, restrained foreign policy, and a balanced federal budget. One candidate in the 3rd congressional district will do just that. I’m proud to endorse David Lashar for Congress.”

Vote Different – Your Pragmatic Libertarian Alternative to the Ds and Rs

Fed up with the polarization and dysfunction in Washington? Offended by the divisiveness of Trump and the irresponsibility of congressional Republicans? Appalled by the mobbing incivility and the ever-growing list of “free stuff” from congressional Democrats? Seeking something other than the politics of resentment and demonization being practiced on BOTH the Left and the Right in Washington?

If so, as described in this video, you have the opportunity on November 6 to vote different and send a pragmatic libertarian to Congress as a powerful swing vote in a split Congress: Me, David Lashar, who is…

1. Tolerant, responsible, and civil. Accomplished in both business and government. Thoughtful and innovative on the issues of the day.

2. A distinct alternative to the leftward-lurching Democratic incumbent, Rep. John Sarbanes, who after 12 years in the Congress has failed to register a single noteworthy accomplishment; who is pushing the big-government, low-quality list of “free stuff” advanced by Sanders / Jealous; who willfully rendered a third or more of his own constituents politically irrelevant so as to keep himself in office via gerrymandering; who has been stoking hysteria and polarization in Washington as the chair of a purely partisan task force launched by Rep. Nancy Pelosi in early 2017.

3. A distinct alternative to the Republican candidate, Charles Anthony, who has expressed himself to be an unqualified supporter of Donald Trump and has failed to offer ANY opinions or ideas on ANY of the issues of the day, whether on a website or social page of his own; whether in response to candidate surveys from the Baltimore Sun, League of Women Voters, etc.

I myself am standing as alternative to the D and R options for the Maryland 3rd Congressional District after coming to conclusion in late 2017 that our democracy is going to remain victim to a polarized and dysfunctional politics until such time as we escape the us-against-them two-party system that is no longer bringing us government that is representative of the American people. In other words, I finally came to see that the two established parties are no longer hearing or serving those who are regular people in America. These two parties therefore need to be abandoned by regular, decent, responsible voters.

After reaching this conclusion late last year, I decided to leave the GOP and join the Libertarian Party (LP). I joined the LP because it is the ONLY party that consistently respects the dignity of ALL individuals, regardless of race, gender, or sexuality; consistently insists on restraint and accountability from ALL authorities, whether government, corporations, or unions; and consistently resists coercion of ALL types, whether personal, commercial, or political.

Donald Trump, the Modern GOP, and the Modern Left — Time to Vote Different

In this video, I provide my critique of Donald Trump and the modern GOP, explaining why I myself left the party earlier this year.  Below in this post, I also critique the over-reaction by the modern Left to Trump.  All of which polarization and dysfunction is probably inevitable until such time as we escape the modern two-party system.  It is time to vote different.

For Democracy in America: It’s Lashar, not Sarbanes

In this video, I compare my own proposals for preserving democracy in America to those of my incumbent Democratic opponent, Rep. Sarbanes, who conspired in 2011 to render the votes of 1/3 or more of his own constituents meaningless through gerrymandering that protects him from political competition; who is proposing a deceiving election-reform bill that would only reinforce the advantages that incumbents already possess over their challengers; and who is perpetuating and intensifying the polarization in Washington by running a task force established by Nancy Pelosi in 2017 for partisan bickering, sniping, and sparring.

My own priorities and proposals are for a nationwide end to gerrymandering; for term limits that would not only create turnover in Congress but would also strike boldly at the influence of money and the power of party bosses in Washington; for increased ballot access for new political parties as well as all eligible individuals; and for vigilant protection of our rights to free assembly, free speech, and due process.

By standing as a third-party alternative to the Democratic and Republican candidates in the Maryland 3rd Congressional District, I am also providing opportunity for my neighbors to invigorate democracy in America by sending a new voice… a tolerant, responsible, and civil voice… to Washington for speaking sense and seeking cooperation in our dysfunctional, resentful capital.

For Better from Washington: It’s Lashar, not Sarbanes

In this video, I open my critique of the record and the ideas of my Democratic incumbent opponent, Rep. John Sarbanes. In the video, I speak to:

1. His lack of accomplishment after nearly 12 years in Congress,
2. His failure to present innovative ideas for healthcare reform,
3. His demonstrated contempt for the voting rights of his very own constituents,
4. His convoluted election-reform bill that will only reinforce the advantages that incumbents already possess over their challengers, and
5. His plunge into purely partisan politics ever since his appointment by Nancy Pelosi to run a Democratic political task force for never-ending bickering and sparring in Washington.

In forthcoming videos and posts, I will be elaborating. Rep. Sarbanes has had an extended opportunity to make a difference for the people of the Maryland 3rd Congressional District. He has, however, made no difference. And if anything, he is becoming ever more blindly partisan and ever more firmly devoted to the socially divisive and economically irresponsible policies of the radical and oppressive wing of the Democratic Party.

More to come. This is the beginning. From me, David Lashar, the only socially tolerant and fiscally responsible candidate for the Maryland 3rd Congressional District. The only candidate who, being neither a Democrat nor a Republican in a divided Congress, will amplify the voice of… and make a difference for… the people of the Maryland 3rd, if elected by them to Congress this November.

Authoritarianism: Soul-Crushing Whether from Left or Right

In this video, I draw upon my personal experience in the Soviet Union to summarize the problem with authoritarianism and collectivism, whether it is a socialism from the Left or a fascism from the Right. And the problem is: These ideologies and movements are soul-crushing… they are incompatible with human happiness… in sum, because they inevitably entrench a power elite that exploits the rest of society for its own protection and perpetuation.

This personal lesson for me is the general lesson from the history of the 20th century. We can no more allow ourselves a lurch to the oppressive, collectivist Left than we can allow a slide to the resentful, collectivist Right.

We need to remain vigilant against both types of authoritarianism, preserving the dignity and liberty of individuals while demanding both limits upon and accountability from authorities. Which is a lesson that seems to be lost upon the professors in our universities and the pundits in the mainstream media.
